What Kind of Insurance Do You Need For a Restaurant?

August 4, 2022

At RG Insurance, we support local businesses - including restaurants! Watch our RG Connects video series where we highlight restaurants based in the DMV. Previous guests include Chef Ashish Alfred of Duck Duck Goose Bethesda, and Mama Emilia Pupuseria in Rockville.

As a chef, you’ve done the hard work of mastering your craft. Now you are ready to open your very own restaurant!

An important part of starting any business, including a restaurant, is making sure you have the right insurance coverage for all of your risks.

Figuring out the right insurance can be complicated! But we’re here to help make it simple.

A Business Owner’s Policy, or BOP, is a great place to start. This policy combines three general insurance coverages that are important to nearly every business:

General Liability

Protects against property damage or bodily injury caused to customers (e.g. slip and fall, food poisoning)

Commercial Property

Protects against damage to your building, equipment, appliances, furniture, and any similar property (e.g. fires, theft, vandalism)

Business Income

Helps you pay bills and employees if your business has to temporarily close

BOP is a helpful way to cover the basics, but your restaurant might benefit from coverage that addresses more specific or unique risks.

Worker’s Compensation

If you manage a team of employees, Worker’s Compensation is often required by state governments. This coverage helps pay for medical bills and lost wages to employees who are injured on the job.

Employer’s Liability

As an employer, you can also include Employer’s Liability to protect yourself against claims of wrongful firing, discrimination, etc.

Liquor Liability

If you sell alcoholic beverages, Liquor Liability Insurance can help pay legal costs, court fees and civil damages that may come from your liquor sales.

Commercial Auto

Restaurant operations are not just limited to the building itself. Commercial auto insurance covers injuries and damages to covered vehicles while on the job, e.g.  picking up supplies or delivering goods.

Accidents and mishaps do happen. The right coverage can get you back up and running after the unexpected happens. At RG Insurance, we encourage you to use our 20+ years of experience to your advantage!

Our experienced and bilingual agents will be able to evaluate your needs and risks, creating an affordable business policy that is tailor-made for your restaurant, with no coverage gaps or excess.
