4 Ways Small Business Owners Can Delegate Effectively with a Small Team

The hectic holiday season is upon us! If you are a business owner with a small team, the extra demands of the holidays can become overwhelming. Implementing effective delegation skills can ease this burden and keep your business running smoothly!

Delegation is a crucial leadership skill, but it is difficult for many business owners to trust others for key tasks after spending a long time growing the business from the ground up. It is common for them to shoulder multiple responsibilities as a way to ensure control and prevent failure.  

This may work in the short term, but as the business matures, a lack of effective delegation can cause a stall in growth. Read on for some key tips to start delegating more effectively!

1. Develop Awareness of Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses helps you identify tasks that you can delegate to others. It is a good first step to figure out which tasks are time-intensive that don’t require your expertise, or something you’re not great at.

Create a list of these tasks to reference when you are making delegation decisions. Keep in mind that you can delegate portions of tasks to others too! 

2. Develop Awareness of Employee Goals

It is important to learn your employee’s goals at more than surface level. Knowing this information helps you determine which employee is the most compatible for the task you intend to delegate.

Develop this awareness through regular communication with your team and spending time getting to know them. When the time comes to delegate, you will be making an intentional and informed decision, instead of throwing a task at them and seeing what happens.

3. Prioritize Clear Communication and Expectations

Avoid ambiguity and managerial chaos by clearly communicating your expectations to the employee taking on the task. In explicit terms, explain the scope of the task and the desired outcome.

It may be useful to create a manual with job roles and expectations written and organized on paper. This reinforces what the employee should be focusing on, and is something they can reference in the future if needed.

4. Be Flexible and Adjust as You Go

Avoid putting pressure on yourself to make everything perfect the first time, and learn to adjust the process as you go. Conduct regular check-ins with your team to gauge their progress and how well they are adapting to the new tasks. Over time, take note of any pain points that surface, and re-assign or eliminate tasks when necessary.
